Current Status of GHS in Brazil

Brazil is currently working on adopting GHS standards via the GHS Working Group (GT-GHS Brazil), which is made up of more than 40 governmental and non-governmental institutions.

The Brazilian Chemical Association (Abiquim) translated the OSHA/USA GHS Guidance Document into Portuguese. The 2006 Work plan of the GT-GHS includes several training courses and GHS awareness raising seminars as well as preparation and dissemination of information regarding the GHS. Brazil expects to be fully GHS compliant by the year 2008.

Brazilian GHS SDS Format

SDS authoring in Brazil is governed by federal legislation FISPQ (NBR 14725). This legislation requires manufacturers to list health, safety and environmental information for each hazardous chemical in their product, and to keep the SDS up to date and ready available to consumers. Likewise, the legislation states that it is the responsibility of the consumer to follow preventative safety recomendations outlined in the SDS.

Brazilian GHS Product Label Format

No laws specifically related to the authoring and use of GHS compliant product labels in Brazil have been drafted. Annex I of the First Revised Edition of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) provides "Allocation of label elements". Again, however, any national implementation of GHS is likely to have elements which differ from the First Revised Edition.
