Recently, 2013 the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM), hosted by the European Commission Joint Research Centre, has announced the appointment of 13 in vitro test facilities located across the EU as the first members of EU-NETVAL. It is expected that the network will play a strong role in translating new tools and techniques emerging from European research initiatives into reliable and relevant test methods that reduce, refine or replace animal testing. EU-NETVAL is coordinated by the Commission’s own in vitro GLP test facility operated by EURL ECVAM.
EU-NETVAL’s primary role is to provide support for EURL ECVAM validation projects, including aspects of training and dissemination, and the identification of methods that have a potential to reduce, refine or replace animals used for scientific purposes.
EU-NETVAL has been set up by EURL ECVAM in response to the provision of Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes which requests that EU Member States assist the Commission in the validation of alternative methods. Application for membership of EU-NETVAL is currently open for test facilities based in the EU, EFTA countries and the EU candidate countries.
