California proposes listing PFOA, PFOS, under Prop 65

Prop 65

The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (Oehha) issued a notice to list Perfluotooctance (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanic Acid (PFOA) under Proposition 65’s development toxicants.

Based on the US Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposal to list the two substances comes after the discovery that each of the substances are a high priority for preparation of hazard identification materials. Both PFOS and PFOA are surfactants used in a variety of products including, textiles, carpets, leather, and food packaging.

The EPA has now proposed a new use rule to help the voluntary phase out. Comments can be made on the two listing substances until October.
