Chemical Labeling and SDS Requirements in Poland
Poland applies the EU REACH and CLP framework for chemical Safety Data Sheets and hazard labelling. The Polish Bureau for Chemical Substances acts as a national authority and helpdesk for chemical legislation. Hazardous substances and mixtures placed on the Polish market must be classified and labelled under CLP and supported by SDSs prepared under REACH Annex II as amended by Regulation (EU) 2020/878.
SDS Requirements
SDSs supplied in Poland must follow the REACH Annex II 16-section format and the content requirements in Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/878. They must be provided in Polish for recipients in Poland. The SDS should be consistent with the CLP classification and label, include exposure scenarios where required, and be updated when new relevant hazard, risk management, restriction, authorization, or emergency information becomes available.
Consumer Label Requirements
Hazardous consumer chemical products in Poland must bear CLP-compliant labels in Polish. The label must include the required product identifier, supplier details, hazard pictograms, signal word, hazard statements, precautionary statements, and supplemental information. Products such as detergents, biocides, plant protection products, cosmetics, aerosols, and toys or hobby products may trigger additional EU or Polish requirements. Hazardous mixtures in scope may also require UFI labelling and poison-centre notification.
Workplace Label Requirements
Workplace chemical containers should retain CLP label information and match the corresponding Polish SDS. Employers must provide workers with information on chemical hazards, safe handling, protective measures, and emergency actions. Decanted or internal workplace containers should be labelled or otherwise identified so that workers understand the hazards and can trace the container to the relevant SDS and risk assessment.
