Final Cannabis Regulations in Canada: Edibles, Extracts and Topicals

The final round of Cannabis regulations has now come into effect on October 17, 2019.  With the legalization of the three new classes of cannabis, edibles, extracts and topicals, comes amendments to the cannabis regulations which includes revised possession limits as well as additional labelling requirements.

Limits of 10 mg of THC per package of edible cannabis, 10 mg of THC per unit (Such as a capsule or dispensed amount) for extracts, and a limit of 1,000 mg of THC per package for topical products containing cannabis have been established.

While the requirement for plain and child-resistant packaging is retained, there are additional labelling elements that will need to be included such as a list of ingredients for all new classes of cannabis as well as a nutrition facts table for edible cannabis.

In addition to the new requirements there are prohibitions such as a restriction on the listing of health benefits or cosmetic label claims that will have to be considered.
