Germany’s Clean Water PMT Update

The German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) has a proposal that will implement a criteria and assessment that will identify persistent, mobile and toxic substances (PMT).

Back in May, the Agency published its proposal to introduce PMT classification for substances that may be found in both drinking and ground water.

The proposal states that importers and manufacturers can now use the proposed criteria and assessment to help identify PMT substances during REACH registration. Local Authorities, water suppliers and producers of drinking water could potentially use a list published under REACH that identifies the PMT substances.

The long-term goal of this proposal, with the help of REACH and ECHA’s guidance, is to ensure that substances listed under REACH do not compromise the sources of Germany’s drinking water, to ensure that the people of Germany can enjoy fresh and clean water.

The German UBA intends to publish the revised criteria and assessment on their website soon.
