OSHA Labels vs. GHS Labels

-Any printed written or graphic material that will be displayed on the containers of hazardous chemicals.

 

GHS

 

-GHS Labels are, an appropriate group of printed, written and graphic information elements concerning a hazardous product.

 

Purpose:

 

OSHA

 

– The OSHA label acts as a visual reminder of the hazards of the chemical.

 

GHS

 

-The purpose of a GHS label is to have the information about the hazardous chemicals in a globally harmonized manner.

Label Verbiage:

 

OSHA

 

– No specific text to be used on the labels as long as there are hazard warnings.

 

GHS

 

– Hazards contained in the chemical must contain pictograms, have a category, precautionary information and signal words.

 

Signal Words:

 

OSHA

 

– The American National Standard Recommends (ANSI Z126.1) the use of the words, caution, warning, and danger

 

GHS

 

– The labels only use the words danger and warning

 

Guidance:

 

OSHA

 

– Cites the ANSI Z129.1 Standard, but it is not required by law

 

GHS

 

– This will be the Global labelling requirement, once all countries adopt GHS.
