On January 20th, 2022, Health Canada released a new Consumer Product Enforcement Summary Report which summarizes corrective actions taken regarding the compliance of consumer chemicals in Canada. The Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations are enforced by the Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) which recently completed a Cyclical Enforcement (CE) project for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. The intent of the CE project is to verify the industry’s compliance with the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001 (CCCR, 2001).
CPSP surveyed a small sample of consumer chemical products for sale in Canada, targeting products that were deemed likely to have compliance issues. Health Canada inspectors requested classification documents for these products for review, and some products were sent to the Product Safety Laboratory to verify relevant regulatory criteria for corrosivity, flammability, pH, and viscosity. Visual evaluation of over 60 product labels was also conducted.
The CE project resulted in 12 recalls, 23 stop distributions, 1 stop sale, 2 corrections and 10 commitments to address non-compliance for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. A summary of the results can be found here, and individual recall notices and safety alerts can be accessed here.
