Chemical Labeling and SDS Requirements in Chile

Chile regulates the classification, labelling and notification of hazardous substances and mixtures under Decree 57/2019 of the Ministry of Health, published in the Official Gazette on February 9, 2021. The decree implements GHS-based hazard communication for substances and mixtures and should be read with transport, workplace, environmental and product-specific requirements.

SDS Requirements

Safety Data Sheets in Chile should be prepared in Spanish and aligned with the GHS-based requirements of Decree 57/2019 for hazardous substances and mixtures. The SDS should use the standard hazard communication structure, include classification and precautionary information consistent with the label, and be provided to downstream users where hazardous chemicals are supplied for occupational or industrial use.

Consumer Label Requirements

Hazardous substances and mixtures placed on the Chilean market must be labelled according to Decree 57/2019 where the decree applies. Consumer products may also be subject to additional or separate rules for pesticides, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, food-contact products or other regulated categories. Labels should be in Spanish and include the applicable GHS hazard communication elements unless a product-specific regime provides a different requirement.

Workplace Label Requirements

Workplace chemical labels should identify hazardous products and communicate the GHS classification established under Decree 57/2019. For occupational use, labels and SDSs should be consistent and should provide Spanish hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements, product identifiers and supplier information. Employers should also account for occupational safety rules governing chemical handling and storage.
