National Regulations Governing Labels:

Slovakia is a member of the European Union and as such is bound by EU regulations. For pure substances, Austrian labels must be compliant with the EU’s GHS based CLP-regulation No. 1272/2008 – labels created to be compliant with Directive 67/548/EEC have expired. For mixtures, labels can be compliant with either 1272/2008 or with the previous Directive 1999/45/EC.

Additional Regulations:

Slovakia is fully compliant with EU chemical regulations. For more information on environment and chemical policy please refer to the Slovak Environmental Agency. For specific legislation regarding chemical use in Slovakia please refer to the 2001 Act on chemical substances and chemical preparations. Additional information on labeling and standards can be found on the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) website.

The regulations that govern consumer and industrial labels in Slovakia are the same, but the concerns of industry and consumers may differ. In recent news Slovakia has been accused of moving too slow on consumer protection, that as a member of the EU, they are required to provide. For information on consumer rights, legislation and product safety please refer to the Association of Consumer Organizations in Slovakia.

GHS Implementation Status:

The EU has fully adopted GHS under their CLP Regulation (Regulation on classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures). The deadline for having new Labels has passed for pure substances – it was November 30, 2010. The deadline for mixtures is May 31, 2015. Not all the building blocks in the United Nations’ Purple Book were adopted by the EU CLP regulation.

I found the people at Nexreg very helpful when it came to addressing my Canadian product labelling needs. They were always readily available to answer questions and concerns. I’m very glad to have the Nexreg people in my corner when dealing with Canadian compliancy regulations.
