There is no scientific evidence to suggest food packaged in cans which contain Bisphenol A (BPA) is harmful, the Australian Food and Grocery Council says.

It comes after the Herald Sun reported a study that found alarming levels of the toxic chemical BPA was lurking in tinned foods including popular baby brands.

The highest levels have been found in cans containing Edgell Corn Kernels and John West Tuna Olive Oil Blend, consumer watchdog Choice says. It tested 38 samples of canned foods commonly found on Australian supermarket shelves and concluded 29 had BPA levels that could be harmful.

Manufacturing giant Heinz recently agreed to remove BPA from baby food packaging over the next year.
