Environmental and Health groups of Canada are agreeing with the federal environment minister that changes are needed to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (Cepa), which regulates the release of pollution and toxic chemicals used in consumer products.
June 2017 concluded the 16-month review the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment of Cepa. They made 87 recommendations that would help improve the law, which has not been updated since 1999.
One of the 87 recommendations includes reversing the burden of proof onto industry for demonstrating the safety of substances that are of high concern which is a hazard based approach copied from the EU’s REACH.
The Canadian government is aiming to have amendments that will strengthen CEPA by April next year.
