July 31 US: EPA finalises significant new use rule for phenol substance

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finalising a significant new use rule (SNUR) under section 5 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for phenol, 2,4-dimethyl-6-(1-methylpentadecyl). Anyone intending to manufacture, import or process the substance in what is designated a significant new use will be required to notify the EPA at least 90 days before that activity begins. The substance is used in polymer manufacture.
The final rule takes effect on 15 August 2012.
