Saskatchewan's WHMIS Update

There are changes that are coming to Saskatchewan’s hazardous labelling system, as the province will start following the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015) standards.

Updated from the WHMIS 1988, WHMIS 2015 was created to align with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The new WHMIS requirements will include, improved training, adding pictograms instead of symbols, and what was once known as a Material Safety Data Sheet will now simply be known as a Safety Data Sheet.

The change aims to also promote safety within the workplace not only for the province of Saskatchewan, but for the world. Workers will now have appropriate training courses that not only give them information but will also allow for hands-on training within the workplace.

The transition to WHMIS 2015 is between August 17 to December 1, 2018. After December 1, 2018, all companies must comply with WHMIS 2015.
