There is a risk of harm to organisms and the environment by benzenesulfonamide, 2-methyl- , also known as 2-MBS.

The substance, which is primarily used in intermediate fluorescent pigment and some nail polish, is known to potentially cause development issues and effects on the liver and kidneys.

However, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (Cepa), has stated that the substance is not entering the environment in a large enough quantity to endanger Canadians health.

The Canadian government will publish a final screening on the substance in March 2018. For now, stakeholders can submit comments on the draft screening analysis.
