Investigation into the chemicals used in tattoo ink will soon be a priority of European Union regulators, as various health risks have been associated with the substance.
Recently, the EU Commission submitted a formal request to the European Chemicals Agency to start investigating the ink, as studies suggested that a majority of the colourants used in tattoo ink are azo pigments, which is a pigment that can cause severe skin irritation and an allergic reaction. There have also been studies that show when the azo pigment substances come into contact with either UV light or bacteria, they can degrade into carcinogens.
As a result an EU agency has stated that while the EU agency is investigating, tattoo consumers should be more aware of risks of getting a tattoo because although there is good tattoo ink, certain inks used are not intended for tattooing.
