CPSC Bans Five Phthalate Chemicals used in Children’s Toys

 

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has voted to ban five harmful phthalate chemicals found in plastic used for children’s toys.

 

Phthalates are commonly used to soften plastic in many children’s products have been linked to hormone production interference and reproductive development in children.

 

The Chronic Hazard Advisory Panel (CHAP), which helped to examine the effects that the substance in children’s toys, determined that five phthalate chemicals had serious effects on male reproductive development.

 

These five substances are:

 

 

    1. diisononyl phthalate (DINP);

 

    1. di-n-pentyl phthalate (DPENP);

 

    1. di-n-hexyl phthalate (DHEXP);

 

    1. dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP); or,

 

    1. diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP).

 

 

CPSC has also asked that for a notice of requirement for laboratories to test the newly banned substances and children’s toys.
